Kamigumi Acquires Port Terminal Operating License in the Port of Thilawa, Myanmar
On March 22, 2018, Kamigumi concluded a concession agreement with the Myanmar Port Authority (MPA) for operation of the Port of Thilawa ODA Terminal. This terminal is a multipurpose terminal to be constructed with ODA loans (yen loans) from the Government of Japan. In 2013, Kamigumi was contracted by JICA to carry out a preliminary survey during which the Company examined the business viability of operating this terminal from the standpoint that in the near future logistics hubs will relocate from the Port of Yangon to the Port of Thilawa due to growing throughput associated with Myanmar's economic growth and due to traffic congestion in downtown Yangon. This study was integral in Kamigumi's conclusion of this concession agreement.
The Port of Thilawa is capable of accommodating larger vessels than the Port of Yangon and offers the geographic advantage where ships do not need to wait for favorable tidal conditions at the inner bar. As a result, the Port of Thilawa can receive cargo for import/export more quickly.
The operation of this terminal will become Kamigumi's fourth logistics hub in Myanmar after Kamigumi EFR (integrated logistics company), TGL (logistics company in Thilawa SEZ), and IBTT (Thilawa bulk terminal operating company). In February 2019, Kamigumi plans to take delivery of the terminal's facilities from MPA.
By engaging in various port and harbor operations, with a focus on container ship handling, Kamigumi will introduce its long-standing port operation know-how to this terminal, contribute to the enhancement of social infrastructure in Myanmar, and contribute to the country's economic development.
Through our involvement in the operations of this terminal, Kamigumi will seek to build up its network connecting its existing international terminals in the Port of Laem Chabang, Thailand, the Port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and the Port of Valencia, Spain as well as its domestic network in Japan to further globalize and expand the terminal's operations.
